Recognizing the Symptoms of Mood Disorders
The first step in seeking treatment is understanding the symptoms. Have you experienced stretches of time where your thoughts race, you feel unusually energized, or you struggle with impulse control? These could be signs of a hypomanic episode.
Hypomanic State
The hypomanic state of a mood disorder may involve:
Increased Energy
Elevated Mood
Fast Speech
Racing Thoughts
Irritability
Feelings of Invincibility
Risky or Impulsive Behaviors
Heightened Sexual Drive
Taking on Unrealistic Projects
Decreased Need for Sleep
These symptoms may escalate into more intense phases if left unaddressed.
Manic State
This more intense state may be marked by:
Euphoria
Extreme Hyperactivity
Inability to Sleep
Disregard for Consequences
Hallucinations
Delusional Thinking
Obsessive or Compulsive Behaviors
A Break from Reality
Individuals in a manic state may find it impossible to manage impulses and may engage in self-destructive behaviors such as excessive spending, substance abuse, or other risky actions. Lack of sleep and substance use can worsen the condition, making professional intervention essential.
Depressive State
On the opposite end of the mood spectrum is the depressive state. While experiences vary, individuals may feel sadness, emotional numbness, or even physical pain. Common symptoms include:
Low Energy
Sadness or Emotional Numbness
Hopelessness
Loss of Motivation
Disinterest in Hobbies or Goals
Thoughts of Death or Suicide
Self-Harm Ideation
Forgetfulness or Cognitive Fog
Trouble Sleeping or Sleeping Excessively
Flu-Like Aches and Pains
Depressive episodes can interfere with daily activities such as hygiene, work, school, or social engagement. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please seek help immediately by calling 911 and going to your nearest hospital.

I have been a patient of Dr Molina’s for over 10 years. He really has an invested interest in his patients getting better. I followed Dr. Molina from a large group of Dallas psychiatrists to his current practice. During the Arctic blast of 2020, he made sure that all his patients were able to get their medications even when most of us had no power and no ability to get to his office. He and his staff worked long hours and after hours to ensure that all patients were called and had their medications refilled and new appointments booked. They even transferred my script when I found out my first pharmacy had also lost power and was not open. Dr. Molina and his staff treats his patients with dignity and respect. It takes a special and caring person to become a psychiatrist. Often times they have to manage patients with severe depression or even hallucinations who may have good days and bad days. I’ve had nothing but professional and outstanding care from Dr. Molina and his entire staff at his clinic. I would highly recommend this physician to anyone who needs help with mental health including sleep disorders.
